• Description: Investigates complaints of employment discrimination based on race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer only), marital status, sex, age (older than age 40 only), and sexual orientation as well as family and medical leave disputes. Investigates complaints of housing discrimination based on race, color, religious creed, sex, marital status, national origin or ancestry, children/age, physical or mental disability, or sexual orientation. Investigates complaints of public accommodation discrimination based on arbitrary discrimination related to a protected class. Investigates complaints by victims of alleged hate crimes. Victims of hate crimes who file a complaint within 2 years of the alleged incident may be awarded damages, and the Department may also seek restraining orders, civil fines, and payment of attorney's fees.
